ICC, the governing body of international cricket, acknowledged recently that the account of Cricket South Africa was compromised on Twitter.

The account was hacked on Monday after which it posted tweets about a Bitcoin lottery. The tweets directed users to a Bitcoin wallet address.

What Happened During the Hack?

The account of the South African cricket board (@OfficialCSA) was hacked on Monday after which the hackers posted:

“@OfficialCSA is partnering with @lunomoney for the first South African Bitcoin Lottery. Simply send 0,01 BTC to 13My18T92DCzGdrtiCgRuS32T6rFLjnG56 and your BTC Wallet Address will be entered into a BTC Lottery for 20BTC (That’s Over R1Mil). Lottery closes at 15 Jan @ 10PM.”

They sent two more tweets related to the same.

Cricket South Africa got its account back after a few hours noting:

“And… we’re back! Apologies to all our Twitter followers who were affected by the hack overnight. We are back in control & ready to bring you what promises to be an even more eventful Day 4 of Test cricket. Thank you to our friends at the @ICC for your assistance this morning.”

ICC Helped Spread the News of the Hack

The ICC acknowledged the news of the hack and asked its followers on Twitter not to engage with the South African account until the issue has been resolved.

It also asked users not to click on any links provided by the account.

Alistair Hogg, the digital content manager at the cricket body also noted that they have reached out to Twitter to solve the issue as the account was compromised overnight.

This is the first major hack in the cricketing world related to cryptocurrencies.

Cricket is a popular sport in South Africa, and the team is currently playing a test series against Pakistan in Johannesburg.
